GUWAHATI, Jan 15: People across Assam celebrated Bhogali or Magh Bihu with gusto and traditional gaiety. After the Uruka feast yesterday night (Jan 14), people lit Mejis — the traditional hut-like bonfire made with wood and stray – and prayed for peace and wellbeing of their families and loved ones besides thanking the almight for a bountiful harvest.
The celebrations were, however, marked with protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Amid Bhogali Bihu celebrations, people across Assam burnt copies of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act along with the Mejis and reiterated their opposition to the Act that has already been imposed by the Centre by issuing a Gazette notification. People were seen burning the copy of the act on the Meji fire after various organizations including AASU appealed to the people of Assam to burn the act during the Bihu celebrations.
People had community breakfasts with Bihu delicacies like laru-pitha, doi-sira besides visiting friends, relatives and near and dear ones.
Meanwhile President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with other political leaders also wished the people on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu.
Traditional games and sports were also organized at various places as part of Bhogali Bihu festivities.
