Sonitpur: Five inter-state car-lifters including woman arrested

GUWAHATI: In a major crackdown on an inter-state gang of car-lifters, Assam police arrested five persons from Sonitpur district. Police also recovered a stolen car from their possession.

The car-lifters have been identified as Jinnat Ali and Nur Ahmed of Dhekiajuli, Ajimuddin alias Arju of Balipara, Rajesh Baguara and his wife Aleb Sang who hail from Dimapaur of Nagaland.

Rajesh Baguara was reportedly working as a teacher at school for a brief period.

Sonitpur district police also recovered a Maruti Zen car bearing registration number AS 25C-9416 from the residence of Jinnat in Dhekiajuli area.

According to police sources, the car-lifters lifted one Bolero pick-up van with registration number AS-25 DC-2612 from southern side of Kolia Bhomora on January 4. The car-lifters also kidnapped Gopal Ray, driver of the pick-up van. The vehicle was carrying personal goods of a deputy commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh. Later, the miscreants released the driver Gopal Ray at Salonibari and fled away with the vehicle.

Meanwhile, police intensified search operation to nab the miscreants after the driver of the stolen vehicle had lodged a complaint at Salanibari police out-post.

On the other hand, the arrested car-lifters were sent to police custody after they were produced before Sonitpur judicial court on Saturday.

Sonitpur police superintendent Mugdhajyoti Mahanta and additional superintendent of police Numal Mahato informed media persons that police has been interrogating the car-lifters for further information.
